Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign

Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign - 17th April 2010
Background
Each year around 150,000 people across the UK experience a stroke. High blood pressure is the single biggest risk factor for experiencing a stroke; 40% of ischaemic strokes could be prevented by the timely identification and treatment of high blood pressure.
It is estimated that 40% of ischaemic strokes could be prevented by the timely identification and treatment of high blood pressure. In England, 34% of men and 30% of women have hypertension. Worryingly, studies indicated that 78% of men and 67% of women with hypertension are not receiving treatment.
Details of the event
Last year South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust piloted a new national campaign at 28 Supermarkets across the South West. The events proved extremely successful, with over 2000 members of the public volunteering for the health checks.
Following the successful pilot, the Trust have been working with the Stroke Association to develop this initiative into the largest health screening campaign delivered by all ten ambulance services across the UK.
The events provide a valuable opportunity for members of the local community to have their blood pressure checked, be screened for atrial fibrillation and learn how to recognise a stroke.
On the 17th April, 30 Know Your Blood Pressure events will be running at Supermarkets across the South West. Confirmed venues within the East and Mid Devon areas (to date) include:
- Tesco Superstore, Salterton Road, Exmouth
- Tesco Superstore, Battishore Way, Sidmouth Road, Honiton
- Morrisons, Kennedy Way, Tiverton
If you would like to take part in this event and have your blood pressure checked FREE OF CHARGE by professionals, please visit the Know Your Blood Pressure stand at any of the venues listed above.
